Halloween Costume / Mask 2019

I know I know. This is a little late, but I needed to write about this because it’s kind of funny.

This year for Halloween my youngest son told me what he wanted to be in early September. My son wanted to be Sans….who the heck is that? My thoughts exactly. So we looked up some pictures, and I thought, okay. this will be easy to make. No problem.

I would just have to make the mask and the rest would be easy. I looked up tutorials online. There were plenty of them, so I chose one and saved it. (I wouldn’t need to start this till October). Mistake #1.

October came, way too fast, and I finally started on my mask project. This was going to fun. I love doing stuff like this. Being creative is my specialty! I hade a list of stuff to get and then it was time to build.

After a crazy amount of hot glue gun sticks and many little finger burns, the first attempt was a FAIL! I don’t even have any pictures for it, it was that bad.

So, I started from the beginning again. This time with the right kind of EVA foam. If anyone knows what the is, without looking it up, they should work at Home Depot or Micheals because they had no idea. They were no help at all!

After a pretty good start, things were looking up. It was working, and I was thrilled. Once the form was done, there was a problem. I didn’t account for how my son would get the mask on. Shoot!

It was big enough, but he had trouble getting it on and off. And he really didn’t like it. He didn’t want to tell me because I had spent to much time on it already, but I knew. My son hated it, and a mother just knows. Another FAIL!

With a week left till Halloween, I still was determined to make this mask. At this point, I didn’t want to just give up. So, hare we go with attempt #3…

I found another website, with a whole different approach. PAPER MACHE! It was so much easier to get the right shape (also WAY less glue). I set off machining, cutting, mudding, sanding, mudding, and sanding again. Finally Painting!

And Voila! The mask just needed some final touches and it was done. I had done it! And still with 16 hours left before it made it’s trick or treating debut.

My boys had a lot of fun and got a lot of candy, while I swore that I would never make another Halloween costume again. Besides, my son is going to be wearing that mask for the next couple of years!

PS – My older son was Naruto. Which is another anime character….Don’t ask me
