Learning the Art of Appreciation

We all have countless blessings in our lives.

But most of the time, we tend to ignore them. We miss them correctly, overlook them, or take them for granted.

We might lose sight of them, and that’s a severe mistake.

In reality, these little blessings have a significant effect on our lives. That’s why we should learn to identify their worth.

So, here’s some information to show you how to learn the art of appreciating the little things in life.

What Does the Art of Appreciating Mean?

Appreciating the little things in life means focusing your attention on what encourages you and upholds you in life. Focus on everything that brings you even the smallest amount of pleasure.

It also means practicing gratitude by noticing these everyday things that you take for granted easily.

By being thankful for the small blessings in life, you won’t stop bad things from happening. But you’ll learn how to stop putting a spotlight on the bad events of your life.

As a result, you’ll find a beneficial source of mental balance.

Why Should You Develop the Skill of Gratefulness?

Having the skill of experiencing and showing gratitude is vital for connecting with other people.

I believe that once you take a minute to appreciate an act of kindness offered by someone you love or a person you don’t even know, you’ll become more aware of your closeness to a group of people who care about each other.

Returning the favour to these gestures only helps to build up these relationships. They create support on which you can lean on in times of need.

This type of positive emotion has been linked to physical health as well.

A positive mindset helps your immune system and speeds up recovery time.

Positive emotions also help us to be more creative and resourceful.

Strong and thriving people build their strengths on positive emotions. These emotions naturally help them to cope with difficult situations.

By learning how to appreciate the little things in life, you’ll enhance the presence of positive emotions in your life and reap the benefit.

How to Include Gratitude into Your Habits

1) Keep a gratitude journal

It is worth it. I promise you.

Research shows that a person with such journals for writing down daily blessings has a more favourable view of their lives, experiences a more positive mood, and even exercises more.

Spend 10 or 15 minutes each day writing down things you are thankful for. That’s how you can improve your appreciation for the little things you usually forget.

b) Create a bulletin board

This can be where you can put up small reminders of things that make you feel grateful. It can be anything from a get-well-soon note to a handwritten letter from a loved one.

At the end of the year or a hospital stay, take all of them down and file them in a particular gratitude folder so you can have a look at how blessed you are.

c) Celebrate the little things

Permit yourself to do this. Here’s how you can celebrate your small wins in life:

  • Celebrate good weather by going outside and maybe taking a walk if you have the energy;
  • When someone around you masters a new skill, give them a small present to celebrate their achievement;
  • Celebrate getting through a daunting treatment or difficult day by doing something you enjoy.

d) Send one email of gratitude a day

Make it a habit to send out one thank-you email or card to someone every single day. This could be a friend, a loved one or even a nurse or doctor. It doesn’t have to be longer than one sentence.

You’ll see the power of this gesture when your connections with people change for the better and your relationships become more rewarding.

e) Slow down your life

When you’re in the middle of an event, it’s crucial that you savour it as much as you can.

Here are ways to help you get the most out of these certain emotions:

  • Keep a vital keepsake of the experience to help yourself recall the memory later on;
  • Enter into the positive experience with all your senses;
  • Keep an eye on details;
  • Share this experience with others – as it happens, or by reminiscing later on.

f) Be present

Decide to be present in the now. This type of awareness of the moment – sometimes called mindfulness – is essential to creating positive emotions with being thankful.

When you’re living with more awareness, you notice everything – even the little pieces of everyday beauty.

You can appreciate the present moment instead of dwelling on negative emotions.

g) Be aware of your most valued things

You need to know the essential things in life. Know what you value the most. If you don’t, it’s a sign that you’re out of touch with yourself.

Connect to what’s most significant to you, and don’t put it off until life gets less busy. Trust me, it never does.

h) Fall asleep with gratitude

In a perfect world, you should wake up and go to bed with gratitude as the most important thing on your mind.

Starting and finishing your day with positive emotions helps to build a balanced life and gets you more than enough healthy sleep in the process.

If you’re having trouble falling asleep at night, it’s most likely that your mind is still thinking over the stressful events of the day.

Instead of thinking about what you need to do tomorrow, try to enter the gratitude mode at bedtime. Think about the beautiful things that happened to you on that day.

Did you notice how the snow cracked under your feet? Or maybe you’ve spotted a beautiful ray of the sun filtered through the leaves of a tree?

Hold on to that memory as you drift off to sleep. You’ll wake up feeling refreshed and full of energy to tackle the challenges of the day.
